A  In the late 1920s, long-distance aviation was still a hazardous enterprise. Aircraft engines were unreliable by modern standards, weather forecasting was primitive, and pilots crossing oceans had none of the satellite-based navigation systems available today. Against this background, an Australian aviator and his colleagues attempted an achievement that many observers regarded as reckless: to fly across the Pacific Ocean from the United States to Australia.

Their aircraft, the Southern Cross, was a large three-engined monoplane adapted for endurance flying. Although it could remain airborne for many hours, its range was not sufficient for a non-stop crossing. The crew therefore planned a route involving intermediate landings in Hawaii and Fiji before the final journey to Australia.

B  The expedition was led by Charles Kingsford Smith, usually known simply as "Smithy", together with fellow pilot Charles Ulm. They were accompanied by two other specialists: James Warner, who operated the radio equipment, and Harry Lyon, who was responsible for navigation. This division of labour was essential. During much of the journey, the pilots had no visible landmarks by which to judge their position, so accurate calculations and reliable communication were every bit as important as skill at the controls.

The aircraft left Oakland, California, at the end of May 1928. The first stage took the Southern Cross westwards to Hawaii. It was a formidable flight, but it was not the longest section of the journey. That came next, when the crew attempted the enormous stretch between Hawaii and Fiji.

C  Crossing such distances required considerable preparation. The crew carried food, drinking water, spare engine parts and emergency supplies. Since an accurate course could not always be maintained by reference to the sun or stars, the navigators relied heavily on instruments. Among the equipment were compasses, which enabled them to continue on a broadly correct heading even when cloud covered the sky.

They also prepared for the possibility of being forced down at sea. Emergency equipment included inflatable rafts, supplies of water and signalling devices. No one imagined that such measures would guarantee survival, but they offered at least a small chance if the aircraft was unable to remain airborne.

D  Weather represented a more unpredictable danger. Pacific storms could develop rapidly, and on parts of the journey the Southern Cross encountered violent wind, thick cloud and heavy rain. At times, observers later reported waves rising to around 15 meters, while the horizon disappeared completely behind low cloud and spray.

Such conditions made visual flying extremely difficult. The pilots could not always distinguish clearly between sea and sky, and the navigator had fewer opportunities to check the aircraft’s position by astronomical observations. For long periods, the crew depended almost entirely on instruments and radio information.

E  The Hawaii-to-Fiji leg tested both the machinery and the men severely. It was considerably longer than the earlier Oakland-to-Hawaii stage and left little room for navigational error. A substantial deviation from the planned course could have caused the aircraft to miss the islands completely.

Radio contact helped reduce this risk. Warner transmitted and received messages that allowed the crew to compare their estimated position with information from the ground. Even so, there were periods when communication became weak or irregular. The flight demanded constant adjustment rather than simply following a fixed direction across the ocean.

F  After finally reaching Fiji, the men could not immediately continue. Poor weather delayed the final stage, and the crew remained there for almost a week. The pause gave them time to inspect the Southern Cross, replenish supplies and study the forecasts before attempting the journey towards Australia.

Eventually conditions improved sufficiently for departure. The last major section brought them towards Brisbane. By then, news of the flight had spread through newspapers and radio reports, and large numbers of Australians were following its progress.

G  When the Southern Cross finally reached Australia, the reception was extraordinary. Crowds gathered to see both the aircraft and the men who had flown it. Newspaper reports repeatedly referred to the crew’s determination and bravery, portraying the crossing not merely as a technical achievement but as evidence that long-distance aviation was entering a new era.

The public celebration also had a practical effect. Aviation remained expensive, and record-breaking journeys could not be financed by enthusiasm alone. Public appearances, lectures and promotional tours associated with the flight generated money that could be invested in later aviation projects.

H  The importance of the Southern Cross flight should not be measured only in kilometres travelled. It demonstrated that oceanic air routes were possible, while simultaneously revealing the limitations of contemporary technology. The crew survived because preparation, navigation, engineering and communication worked together.

The Pacific had not suddenly become safe to cross by air. However, after the journey of the Southern Cross, what had previously seemed almost impossible had begun to look achievable.

A  Among Japan’s many ceramic traditions, Bizen ware occupies an unusual position. Produced mainly in the area that is now Okayama Prefecture, it is associated with one of the country’s oldest continuously active pottery centres. Archaeological evidence indicates that recognisable forms of Bizen pottery were already being produced many centuries ago, and techniques were gradually refined through generations of local craftspeople.

Unlike some decorative traditions that disappeared and were later reconstructed from historical records, Bizen developed through an almost uninterrupted relationship between potters, local clay and wood-fired kilns. Its long history is consequently part of its modern identity: buyers are not simply purchasing a vessel but an object connected with roughly a thousand years of ceramic production.

B  Perhaps the most striking feature of traditional Bizen is what potters do not add to it. The surface receives no artificial glaze before firing. Instead, colour and pattern emerge inside the kiln itself.

A traditional firing may continue for as long as 10 days, consuming large quantities of wood. During this period, ash circulates through the kiln and settles unevenly on the vessels. Flames move around pots differently depending on where they have been placed, while temperature varies from one section of the kiln to another. The result is impossible to predict with complete accuracy. One pot may emerge reddish-brown, another may carry grey-green traces of melted ash, and a third may display marks produced by contact with neighbouring pieces.

Thus, fire functions almost as a second artist. Potters determine the form of a vessel, but the kiln contributes much of its final appearance.

C  The character of Bizen also depends on its raw material. Local clay is dense and contains a relatively high proportion of iron. This mineral composition helps produce the rich earthy colours associated with the ware after prolonged firing.

However, the clay creates difficulties as well. It is not ideally suited to certain highly refined shapes, and the firing process can cause cracks or deformation if preparation is careless. Generations of potters therefore developed techniques for cleaning, ageing and mixing the clay before shaping it.

The combination of mineral-rich earth, prolonged heat and wood ash explains why authentic Bizen is difficult to reproduce simply by copying its outward appearance somewhere else.

D  Early Bizen objects were primarily practical. Large storage jars, bowls and containers were valued because they were durable and useful rather than because they were rare works of art.

Over time, however, the cultural position of Bizen changed. This was particularly evident as the Japanese tea ceremony became an important part of elite social and artistic life. Tea masters appreciated objects that appeared natural, restrained and imperfect rather than excessively polished. The irregular surfaces and subdued colours of Bizen suited this taste remarkably well.

As a result, containers that might once have been seen simply as household objects began to acquire aesthetic prestige. Water jars, flower vessels and other pieces associated with the tea ceremony became especially admired.

E  Historical success did not protect the industry from later decline. New methods of mass production provided consumers with cheaper and more uniform ceramic goods. At the same time, changing tastes encouraged buyers to choose smooth, brightly finished pottery rather than the darker and less predictable surfaces characteristic of traditional Bizen.

The number of active workshops fell. Some families abandoned pottery entirely, while others adapted their production to goods that could be sold more easily. By the early modern period, there were fears that important skills might disappear as younger generations looked for more secure forms of employment.

The very slowness that gave Bizen its character was an economic disadvantage. A firing lasting many days required fuel, labour and patience, while industrial ceramics could be produced in much greater quantities.

F  The twentieth century brought a significant change in attitude. Collectors, historians and cultural institutions began to view traditional craft not as an outdated form of manufacturing but as an important element of Japanese cultural heritage.

Official recognition of leading craftspeople and traditional ceramic practices gave Bizen new visibility. It encouraged apprenticeship, supported exhibitions and helped create a market for pieces made by hand rather than by industrial machinery. In this context, irregularity ceased to be regarded as a defect; instead, it became evidence that the object had been shaped by an individual potter and transformed by a particular firing.

This protection did not freeze Bizen in the past, but it helped ensure that the knowledge required to produce it was passed on.

G  Today’s Bizen potters work in a market very different from that of their predecessors. Their products may be displayed in international galleries and bought by collectors who have never visited Japan. Yet many workshops continue to use local clay and long wood firings.

At the same time, contemporary artists are experimenting with scale, form and kiln placement. Some produce abstract sculpture rather than conventional vessels; others deliberately position pieces so that ash and flame create dramatic surface effects. What has revived, therefore, is not a museum copy of an old craft but a living tradition capable of innovation.

Modern Bizen survives because continuity and experimentation are not treated as opposites. The basic materials remain familiar, while the objects made from them continue to change.

Group Behaviour

A  People rarely perform in complete isolation. Students take examinations surrounded by other candidates, athletes compete before spectators, musicians play to audiences, and employees frequently work as members of teams. Psychologists have therefore long been interested in a deceptively simple question: does the presence of other people improve individual performance or make it worse?

The difficulty is that both effects have been observed. A runner may achieve a personal best when competing against another athlete, yet a learner attempting a difficult new task may make more mistakes when watched. Similarly, individuals sometimes work harder in groups, but in other circumstances they reduce their effort because responsibility is shared.

Understanding these contradictions has produced two important areas of research: social facilitation, which concerns changes in performance caused by the presence of others, and social loafing, in which individuals contribute less effort when their work becomes part of a group result.

B  One of the earliest systematic observations came from psychologist Norman Triplett. He had noticed that cyclists often recorded faster times when racing against competitors than when riding alone against the clock.

Triplett later designed a controlled experiment involving children. Participants were asked to wind fishing line onto reels as quickly as possible. Some performed the task alone, while others worked beside another child carrying out the same activity. Many of those working alongside another participant completed the simple activity more rapidly.

Although the experiment would appear elementary by present-day standards, it became influential because it suggested that another person’s presence could alter performance even when the individuals were not formally cooperating.

C  Several decades later, Robert Zajonc proposed a broader explanation. He argued that the presence of other members of the same species increases a person’s general level of physiological arousal. This heightened state makes the individual’s dominant response--the response most likely to occur in a particular situation--stronger.

This produces different outcomes according to the difficulty of the activity. On easy or well-practised tasks, the dominant response is usually correct, so performance may improve. On unfamiliar or complex tasks, however, the most immediate response is more likely to be wrong. Increased arousal may therefore cause performance to deteriorate.

Zajonc’s model was attractive because it explained why an audience could sometimes help and sometimes hinder without assuming that different psychological mechanisms were required.

D  Not everyone accepted the idea that mere physical presence was sufficient. John Cottrell argued that people respond strongly to an audience because they believe that audience may judge them.

According to this view, known as evaluation apprehension, the critical factor is not simply whether another person is nearby but whether the performer expects to be assessed. A silent observer who is clearly watching may therefore influence performance more than someone who happens to occupy the same room while paying no attention.

This approach shifted the debate from biological arousal alone towards people’s interpretation of the social situation.

E  A further contribution came from Hazel Markus and colleagues, who investigated what happened when people carried out familiar and unfamiliar activities in the presence of another person.

In one experiment, participants performed routine actions connected with clothing. Some aspects were highly familiar, while others required less automatic responses. Performance on the familiar components became faster in the presence of an attentive observer, whereas the more difficult components tended to take longer.

The experiment was important because the observer did not have to provide encouragement, instructions or competition. The effect depended largely on how well established the behaviour already was. Markus’s findings therefore supported the prediction that the same social situation could facilitate one kind of action and interfere with another.

F  Audience effects are only one part of the psychology of groups. Researchers also discovered that adding people to a task does not necessarily produce a proportional increase in output.

Bibb Latané and colleagues examined this phenomenon using activities such as shouting and clapping. When participants believed that their effort was being combined with that of other people, the amount produced by each individual tended to decrease as the apparent size of the group increased.

The researchers called this reduction social loafing. One reason is that personal responsibility becomes harder to identify. If no one can determine exactly how much each member contributed, individuals may feel less pressure to maintain maximum effort.

G  Experiments on loafing required careful measurement because researchers needed to distinguish a genuine decline in motivation from simple coordination problems. In one design, participants were placed in separate rooms, preventing them from physically interfering with one another. Their sounds or other outputs could then be recorded separately.

The results were later averaged in order to estimate what would be expected from a group of a particular size. Researchers could compare this figure with performance when participants believed they were acting as part of a collective.

Such methods showed that reduced group output could not always be explained by people getting in one another’s way. Sometimes individuals genuinely appeared to invest less effort.

H  The practical significance of these findings extends far beyond psychological laboratories. Managers may obtain better results by making individual contributions visible rather than allowing responsibility to disappear into a large team. Teachers may need to consider whether students are completing a familiar exercise or struggling with a difficult new skill when classmates are watching.

The broader lesson is that groups do not have one simple effect on human behaviour. Other people can increase effort, reduce it, sharpen well-learned responses or disrupt complicated ones. What matters is the structure of the task, the individual’s experience and whether responsibility can be traced to a particular person.
